This is wonderful and insightful, thanks Andy.

I wish the PM had a second of thinking of other people’s lives and suffering, and doing something for the benefit of others. He is horrible and shameful, just like trump.

Thank you (again), Andy.

This may be apocryphal, but has come down the centuries as having happened. When King George learned that George Washington a) gave up his military commission as a prerequisite to be president of a civil society, b) refused to be called Your Majesty / Your Excellency, etc and

c) CHOSE to give up great power after two terms, King George is reputed to have said (paraphrase), “If what I have heard of Washington is true, then he may be the greatest man who ever lived.”

Dear President Biden - You and your incorruptible legacy are in very good company. Thank you for loving and living our precious and threatened democracy.

Peace to all -Anna

Thank you for reminding me of that King George quote—apocryphal or not, it’s good!

Wow. One of your most poignant and important posts. It reminds me of the time, in 2007, that my mom was told she had inoperable lung cancer, but she insisted on having a special test to see if anything could be done to reverse the diagnosis. (She was wise enough to know otherwise, yet nevertheless demanded the test.) I was told she had 4-6 weeks to live, but Selma would not accept that. She hung on to see where her beloved grandson, Max, would attend college. "Bowdoin? I never heard of it. Why not Wesleyan? You could visit me every week!" She also wanted to watch a "performance" of her granddaughter who was in the musical GYPSY at her school, so we drove to Connecticut, costume in hand, where Emma performed her Tessie Tura routine. Mom hung on for 12 weeks and they were good ones, with all of us spending quality time with a woman we all loved.

They sure do. If/when we’re in Portland, I’d love to get together.(Max may be moving to that area once his wife completes her medical fellowship.)

I just tried to post today's commentary on Facebook, and it was rejected, for all sorts of spurious reasons! Of course, I complained to The FB Powers-that-Be. I wonder what their response, if any, will be.
